What inspired Stephen King to write Carrie?

Stephen King was inspired to write "Carrie" after working as a high school janitor and being struck by the image of a teenage girl with menstrual blood running down her legs. He combined this image with his own experiences of being bullied to create the story of a bullied girl with telekinetic powers seeking revenge.
