The four steps in neurotransmission are:
-
Synthesis and storage: Neurotransmitters are synthesized in the neuron and stored in vesicles.
-
Release: When an electrical signal (action potential) reaches the axon terminal, it triggers the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft.
-
Receptor binding: The released neurotransmitters bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, leading to a response.
-
Termination: The neurotransmitter's action is terminated through reuptake into the presynaptic neuron, enzymatic degradation, or diffusion away from the synaptic cleft.
