What if you lose the one and only key you are given for rental car?

Contact the rental agency and tell them. They may or may not have another key available. In either case, they should be able to arrange to switch out the car for a different one.

Be aware that you may be liable for the costs associated with this. At the least, most companies charge a fee for losing the key.
