Keyhole surgery (laparoscopy/ MIS-minimally invasive surgery) uses a small incision instead of a large incision, to allow the insertion of the medical instruments, lights and a camera into the area of operation. This reduces the damage to surrounding tissue, posssibly gives a quicker recovery, may be less painful and cause less scarring.
The area of operation may be inflated for ease of manouevrability, with carbon dioxide gas.
