It depends on your leadership style. How do you get people to follow you? Leadership in business is more your management style, the trick is to get people to do what you want them to do. Do you prefer to threaten people or encourage people? Employees have to respect your authority and trust you, they don't have to like you. I've always thought it best to treat everyone as an equal and with respect. You have to earn their trust. Think of the golden rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. Leadership by example is important - it's difficult to crticize someone for being late if you're always late, too.
