Fraternal twins, or dizygotic twins, form when two separate eggs are fertilized by two different sperm cells during the same menstrual cycle. This results in two genetically distinct embryos developing simultaneously in the womb. Factors such as maternal age, genetics, and certain fertility treatments can increase the likelihood of fraternal twin pregnancies. Unlike identical twins, fraternal twins do not share the same genetic makeup and can be of different sexes.
