Caitlin is the anglicized Gaelic form of Catherine. Catherine, itself a variation of Katherine, is derived from the Greek katharos meaning "pure". A less likely theory is that it is linked to the Greek aikia meaning "torture".
It is the name of a Christian martyr who was tortured on the infamous Catherine wheel. Catherine the Great was an empress of Russia. Three of Henry the VIII's wives also bore thename.
