Why is knowledge of a country's culture is important?

In diplomacy, to establish and maintain solid good relations and avoid making enemies by offending other nations or governments unwittingly; in war, to work out how to win the hearts and minds of the population; as a person, to avoid giving offense or to be successful at making a business deal.
