What does Bless thy sweet eyes mean?

It's a kind of fancy way of saying "Bless you". "Bless your eyes" was, for some reason, a reasonably common expression at one time (like, 19th century; I'm pretty sure the phrase occurs at least once in either Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn). I don't really know why the eyes in particular were singled out.
