How do you determine if a object is a living thing?

You know it's living if it has the following:

Cells - All living things have cells with chromatin; cells are the building blocks of life. Metabolism - All living things eat, drink, breathe and excrete.

Growth - All living things take in material from the environment to enlarge. Reproduction - All living things are able to produce a copy of them.

Irritability - All living things are able to react to a change in their environment. Adaptation - All living things are able to compete with each other for food and space to survive.
