What happen in chapter 1-4 for The Cay?

In chapters 1-4 of "The Cay," 11-year-old Phillip Enright and his mother are escaping Curacao just as World War II begins. Their ship is torpedoed, Phillip is separated from his mother, and is rescued by an older black man named Timothy from the water. Timothy and Phillip find themselves stranded on a small, uninhabited island in the Caribbean.
