Carbon dioxide systems are used for fire protection of ship holds and engine rooms. The International Maritime Organization acknowledges this in their standards. Carbon dioxide systems were used as a refrigerant before R-12 was discovered, and may come back to dominate as a refrigerant as the latter is linked to climate change.
