Are red humped caterpillars poisonous

Yea a lot in the U.S.A some are eving moving so much that they are invading other places but im not sure where. but in Canada im not sure cause i touched a hairy catterpillar withoute knowing and i didn't get poisoned for some reason not only that i have it in captivity right now
