During 1860, the Democrats had splintered into three parties. Stephan A. Douglas ran as the "official" Democrat opponent to Lincoln. The new Constitutional Liberty Party placed John Bell of Tennessee as their candidate and John Breckinridge ran as a Liberty Party candidate.In the 1864 US presidential race, Lincoln's only opponent was former general George B. McClellan.
