What is the meaning of a swallow bird in literature?

Swallows represent the path to home, especially in regard to sailors who are a long way from home. The Barn Swallow's flight home represents the coming of Spring. It is also noted for the swiftness of flight, therefore, it can be used to indicate some fast moving event or emotion.
