Why are the cows the color red?

Before farmers could buy paint that would protect the wood on their barn from rotting, they mixed flaxseed oil and milk along with lime and eventually with rust. The combination of this turned the liquid a red colour. When paints became available, farmers continued to paint their barns red in honor of the farmers before.
