Harley uses a belt instead of a chain because chains are messy, need constant adjustment, wear out sprockets and have a relatively short service life.

A belt on the other hand is clean, rarely needs adjustment, is easy on sprockets and has a very long service life. 100,000 miles or more from a belt is very common.

Harley chose not to use shaft drive because it is inefficient in that it robs power from the bike due to friction.
