What are jack studs?

Jack studs, also known as trimmer studs, are short vertical framing members used in construction to support the load of a header above openings such as doors and Windows. They are typically placed on either side of the opening and transfer the weight from the header down to the bottom plate. By providing additional support, jack studs help maintain the structural integrity of the wall while allowing for proper framing around openings.
