The Przewalski horse, a wild horse native to the steppes of Central Asia, was declared extinct in the wild in 1969 due to habitat loss, hunting, and competition with domestic livestock. However, it survived in captivity, and conservation efforts led to successful breeding programs. In the 1990s, these efforts resulted in the reintroduction of Przewalski horses into their native habitats, and they are now considered critically endangered but no longer extinct in the wild.
