Well, one of the most common problems tend to be a problem with fluid levels. One such problem could be a break in a seal somewhere or perhaps a faulty solenoid. Locating a leak in a seal isn't so difficult and patching it up long enough to get a proper replacement isn't so hard either. A solenoid is a special sort of gasket I guess you could call it, that regulates the fluid to the transmission, so if it is damaged then you will either have too much or not enough fluid going to the transmission. Usually the damage can be seen visually if you remove the gasket itself, and a replacement isn't so expensive or hard to come by either.
