In Russian we like to shorten the names of people who are close to us, so "Tosha" is a short form of "Anton" and "Anatoliy" (male) as well as "Antonina" (female).
However, many shortened names bear little resemblance to their full versions which can be very confusing to non-Russian speakers e.g. "Alexandr(a)" becomes "Sasha" (both male and female),"Vladimir" turns into "Vova", "Georgiy" or "Yegor" - "Gosha" etc.
