The main reason why turkeys have bald heads is an example of sexual selection which is discussed in the book "Origin of Species," by Charles Darwin. In the Darwinian fitness, it measures reproductive success. Such as the peahen is attracted to the best peacock with the best and most beautiful tail, turkey males change colors on their heads, fan their tails and thump their feet and wings on the ground and shake and gobble. This turns the hen on! The hen, if you have had the chance to notice, keeps tiny feathers and fuzz on her head. Both sexes can have beards, gobble, (but the female sounds different) and they both fan their tails. Usually the female that fans out is the dominant hen.

A turkey has the same traits as a vulture and other types of bald headed birds. The turkey scavenges and eats just about everything they find in the ground. Their heads repel mud, rotten meat, mush, oatmeal and other sticky stuff.
