Great Britain as a sovereign nation dates from the union of Britain (England and Wales) with Scotland in 1707. The modern nation is more specifically the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which dates from 1801 (all of Ireland) or 1922 (just the northern section of the Irish island).
