Why is the Newfoundland Timber wolf extinct?

as rare is this question is this answer is even more rare.... ill start off to say early settlers say them as such a threat that it was orderd that all wolves on the island of Newfoundland to be killed!! my grand father was a trapper on the west coast of Newfoundland and killed the last recorded timber wolf in Newfoundland..... francis webb
