The first king of Uruk, according to Sumerian mythology and historical texts, is Gilgamesh. He is often depicted as a semi-divine hero and is the central figure in the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest known literary works. Gilgamesh is credited with various accomplishments, including the construction of the city's walls and seeking immortality after the death of his friend Enkidu. His reign is estimated to have occurred around the early third millennium BCE.
