Bartholomew Roberts, a notorious pirate of the early 18th century, died on February 10, 1722, during a battle with British naval forces off the coast of Angola. He was shot in the abdomen, which ultimately led to his death. After his defeat, his crew buried him at sea, following the pirate custom of disposing of their dead comrades in a way that honored their adventurous lives. His death marked the end of a highly successful and infamous career in piracy.
