Why did your green caterpillar turn brown?

If your caterpillar turned brown it might either have died or, most likely, it pupated and started to turn into a butterfly or a moth.

Usually if it is a dark brown and still caterpillar-shaped, it has probably died, but if it is a lighter brown or reddish colour and has a different shape, it is most likely starting a cocoon.
