Severo Ochoa was a Spanish-American biochemist best known for his research on the biochemical processes of nucleic acids, particularly RNA synthesis. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1959 for his work on the mechanisms of RNA synthesis and the discovery of the enzyme RNA polymerase. His research contributed significantly to the understanding of genetic coding and the role of RNA in protein synthesis.
