What does a state attorney general do?

The attorney general is head of the US Department of Justice and the chief law officer of the federal government. He or she represents the United States in legal matters generally, and gives advice and opinions to the president and to other heads of executive departments as requested.

The Attorney General enforces the laws of the US and oversees the several US Attorneys who conduct prosecutions for federal offenses.
