Why do volcanoes form in east Africa?

The central African volcanoes were formed by rifting. The African tectonic plate covers all of the continent of Africa. The western rift is bounded by some of the highest mountains in Africa. The eastern rift extends from Tanzania through Kenya to Ethiopia.
