The choko is known by many names, chayote and vegetable pear are two. The scientific name is Sechium edule. The plants are short-lived perennial vines and need a long growing season. Typically they need between 100 and 150 frost-free days before the female flowers are produced which if pollinated will be followed by the fruit. The vines are usually grown for about 3 years in warm locations before they decline or are replaced.
