What does it mean to hang a black eagle emblem on the gable of your home?

I was searching for this too and after a couple different google searches I only came up with this post and one on another blog. The one on the other blog stated that it meant the house was fully paid for. In other Words the owners of the house actually own it outright and not a bank.
