A dog is actually a subspecies of the Grey wolf (canis lupis). In other Words, dogs are basically domesticated Grey Wolves.
Dogs are domestic and descended from wolves, while wolves are wild and don't have such diverse breeds.
A dog is domestic and a wolf is wild and cannot bark, but only does quiet barks when wanting attention or when afraid. Wolves are hard to tame and are aggresive mostly.
When most people say "dog, they mean the domesticated variety, that we make our pets. The wolf is a canine. The wolf is almost always in the wild, with wild habits. Some of those habits do show up in our domestic pets.
