Why are pharmaceutical companies allowed to give gifts to doctors and hospitals?

Because they lobbied your politician with millions of dollars. In most other countries they are not allowed to advertise. However, in many other countries cigarettes can be advertised anywhere - in the US there are now many limits on where cigarettes can be advertised. For example, when is the last time you saw a cigarette ad on TV? Maybe 1985 or something like that.
