Why do the lengths of daylight and night time vary throughout the year?

Because the Earth is round, and because the Earth's axis of rotation is tilted 23 1/2 degrees as compared to the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. So at varying times through the year, the north pole is tilted a little toward, or a little away, from the Sun.
