Each year a group of mushrooms grow on the school lawn. They are destroyed when the lawn is mowed for the first time each year. Yet each year they continue to grow in the same place?

The mushrooms are likely growing from spores that are present in the soil. These spores can remain dormant until conditions are favorable for growth, such as the right temperature and moisture levels. When the lawn is mowed, the visible part of the mushroom (the fruiting body) is destroyed, but the underground mycelium network remains intact, allowing the mushrooms to regrow from the same spot each year. This cycle of growth and destruction is common in fungi that reproduce through spores.
