Deborah Sampson was born on December 17, 1760, in Plympton, Massachusetts, and is best known for disguising herself as a man to serve in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Enlisting under the name Robert Shurtlieff, she fought for over a year before her gender was discovered. After the war, she became a lecturer and advocate for women's rights, and in recognition of her service, she was awarded a pension. Sampson passed away on April 29, 1827, leaving a legacy as one of the first women to serve in the military in the United States.
