Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) are a summer blooming annual dicot. They need full sun, moist, well-drained soil and heavy mulch to support their tall structure and heavy blooms, and they are heat/drought tolerant, but they do not tolerate cold. They should be planted after any danger of a spring frost, and soil temps should be 55-60F.

Depending on the cultivar, it takes about 6-8 weeks for blooms and another month for the seed head to fully develop. Since the seeds are the important end result of the plant, and they are intolerant of cold, the sunflower blooms in the summer mid to late summer months.
