I frequently misplace my phone in my apartment. To find it I call it from my landline phone and track it down from its ringing (but the battery must be charged and the phone turned on).
The phone service provider can always tell the cell tower closest to any cellphone that is turned on, but the cellphone can be several miles from that tower.
If you set "Location Detection" to "On" instead of "911 Only" then the cellphone will always transmit its GPS coordinates to the closest cell tower and your phone service provider can always access this information and could potentially tell you where the cellphone is to within a few feet.
However I doubt most phone service providers would be willing to do this.
I know of no way you could do it yourself.
