What does the coast represent in the Road by cormac McCarthy?

The coast repsrensets the happiness they expected. they expected it to be blue like it used to be. it kept them going for most of their journey because they couldn't wait the see color. But when they realized it was gray like the rest of the world their hope was deminished.
