Do you plant tomato in the ground or in a pot?

Potting mix is what is advised by my gardner husband to plant tomatoes, because it contains peat moss and usually nutrients which will adhere to the roots and keep them moist and fed longer. The soil usually does not contain the substance which will hold moisture over longer periods of time. Water only when mix seems dry when you poke your finger down into the soil at the first joint.
