How many tornadoes were recorded in the US in 1969?

There were 608 recorded tornadoes in the U.S. in 1969. Note however that at this point in history the majority of weak tornadoes were missed and most tornadoes are weak. The actual number of tornadoes was probably much higher than this figure, possibly more than double.
