Third-degree burns are often called "full-thickness" burns, since this indicates thermal penetration of the heat source through the epidermis and dermis to the underlying subcutaneous tissues. The tissue is effectively unable to be rehabilitated unlike blistered skin, and requires surgical skin grafts. Full-thickness burns of over 30% total body surface area generally have a poor prognosis to to the inability of the body to retain fluids and the susceptibility to opportunistic infections.
