You need to keep in mind that a piston engine (as in most cars) isn't a steady supplier of power, particularly not at low revs. There's a burst of energy every time a cylinder fires, then nothing until the next cylinder ignites.

A flywheel is just a large chunk of rotating mass to help even out the power delivery from the engine to the rest of the drive train.
