PELOTON

1. A peloton is the name given to the main large group of cyclists participating in a cycle race on a track or road. Peloton is a French Word which basically means platoon, squad, pack, bunch or group. It also means a small ball. (Spanish pelota)

When the cycle race is on public roads, a large peloton will often be escorted by police outriders.

2. Peloton ('Peloton glass') is a type of ornamental blown glassware which features thin embedded surface decoration of colored spaghetti-like glass strips and also, sometimes, with additional small glass objects. The whole piece is then finished by glazing with a thin coating of clear glass. The peloton technique was patented by Wilhelm Kralik for the Harrach glassware company in Bohemia, West Czech Republic, in 1880.

PELOTONIA

Therefore 'Pelotonia' is either

(a) a collection of peloton glassware, or

(b) a coined Word used in connection with matters in the cycle racing Word. For example the name 'Pelotonia' is used for a fund-raising cancer-charity bike rally.
