There is no more than one language in Chinese, but rather dialects.
There are many of them depending on local area.
Some examples include:
- Mandarin (one of the two most common dialects; the national dialect)
- Cantonese (spoken mainly in Guangdong ["Canton"] and Hong Kong)
- Min'nan
- Hokkien (spoken in Fujian, and a modified version in Taiwan [and residents in Taiwan are mostly fluent in both Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien - although nowadays people know English and Japanese because of revisions in the education system to include English, and because of the Japanese occupation during World War II and the influx of Japanese pop culture in modern times])
- Hakka
- Shanghainese
