What Role did the US play in Panamanian Independence?

US President Theodore Roosevelt desired to have a canal dug to quicken the travelling time from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans. A treaty between USA and Columbia was signed on Jan 22 1903, but Columbia rejected it. Panama declared independence from Columbia (with US support) on Nov 3; Panama recognized on November 6th, and treaty to build the Panama Canal signed on November 19, 1903.
