When the sun and moon are perpendicular to each other, it results in lower high tides, known as neap tides. During these times, the gravitational forces of the sun and moon partially cancel each other out. The highest tides, called spring tides, occur when the sun and moon are aligned, either during a new moon or a full moon, maximizing their combined gravitational pull on Earth's oceans.
