Synthetic inorganic pigments are created through chemical manuffacturing. It used to be that one had to grind or wash clays or minerals, but this new method is much easier. Not only are these kinds of pigments easier to make, but they are usually much purer than organic pigments, much more consisten with their color, and much cheaper. These synthetic inorganic pigments are also very popular because they are the most "lightfast." Colors degrade over time because the reason they have color is that they are absorbing light and that light degrades the molecules around where the light hits the paint. Lightfastness is the ability of a pigment to retain its color even after long exposure to light. Synthetic pigments are also of the most expensive kinds because manufactures will add other chemicals to brighten color and allow the painter to use less pigment.
