Yes, safety is extremely important when working with animals, particularly in medical situations. Animals that are sick, in pain or otherwise not their normal selves can react unexpectedly and violently. This is why most veterinarians do not allow owners to hold their own animals while the veterinarian administers a shot or examines them - the owner may get hurt when the animal bites, scratches or tries to run away.
